What Are Native Plants?
Native Plants, also called indigenous, are plants that were here in Michigan before the European settlers came in the 1700's. These plants have evolved over thousands of years in our particular area. They have adapted to the climate, geography, and hydrology of our region. Native Plants occur in communities, in other words, they have evolved along with other plants. These communities of native plants provide habitats for a large variety of native wildlife species.
Why Plant Native Species?
- They require less fertilizer
- They require less watering
- They are generally more pest resistant
- They are adapted to the soils and climate
- They provide wildlife food and shelter
- They are not likely to be invasive
How Can Native Plants Be Used?
Native Plants can be used in home landscaping, for enhancing wildlife habitat, for streamside restoration, for re-vegetation following construction, and for riparian and greenbelt areas.
