Position Title: Nature Center Docent

Purpose: The position of Nature Center Docent is a vital part of the Grand Traverse Conservation District in supporting the organization’s mission of inspiring exploration, appreciation and conservation of our natural world.

The Nature Center Docent represents the organization to the public who visit the Boardman River Nature Center Tuesday - Friday from 10:00am – 4:00pm, and on select Saturdays.

At this time, we have the following shifts available: Tuesdays from 1:00 - 4:00pm and Wednesdays from 1:00 - 4:00pm

Location: The Nature Center Docent works at the Welcome Desk of the Boardman River Nature Center, located at 1450 Cass Rd., Traverse City, MI 49685.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a positive, welcoming, and cooperative relationship with Nature Center users, Conservation District partners, and other stakeholders.

  • Staff the Welcome Desk as needed, welcome customers, provide information and directions, and handle retail sales.

  • Assist with staff needs, such as bulk mailing and other projects.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Responsible To: Irene Stibitz, Community Engagement Specialist

Time Commitment: One day per week (Tuesday - Friday) for three hours (10:00am – 1:00pm or 1:00 – 4:00pm).

At this time, we have the following shifts available: Tuesdays from 1:00 - 4:00pm and Wednesdays from 1:00 - 4:00pm

Qualifications: Pleasant manner, patience, problem-solving ability, and dependability.

Next Steps & Training: Please fill out the application and indicate you are interested in voluteering for “Nature Center Docent.” Irene Stibitz will then be in contact with you about scheduling an orientation. We will also place you on our general email list so you will receive info on other volunteer opportunities throughout the year!

Training for this specific position will be provided. In addition, staff will be readily available for questions and assistance.
